my poetry

the iron.

the iron. you always have your hand on the iron.
never once burned you. never betrayed you.
that's why you go to it in the night
instead of your husband. that's why.

that's why you cook. you pour green goop
over more green goop and serve it à la carté.
i scrape the green goop off, and look for the meal.
there was you.

that's why you raise children. bad kids.
hostile kids. dumb kids. they got your half of the genes.
they never once pulled away from you.
never once betrayed you.

while you sat at four am cutting
coupons at the kitchen table so you could
say you at least did something productive. these chores. these chores.
Never once betrayed you. but I

"the iron doesn't love you back kathleen"
you prove me wrong
it's always there for you when you need it
and it never once betrayed you.

you hated me more than technology
and the new computer we put in the study.
you hated me more than intelligence, more than sleep
more than that.

"I wonder what's eatin' her up?"
and that's just it
the bottom line
nothing.
